Cayman Islands Minimum Wage

As of April 2017, the minimum wage in Cayman Islands is $2.50 an hour, the same as in most other Caribbean countries. However, employers who employ commission-based employees can use no more than 25 percent, or $1.50, of their gratuities to make up the National Minimum Basic Wage. This law was passed to help raise the minimum wage for workers in the tourism industry. The government is considering a higher minimum wage.

The minimum wage for service employees is $4.50 per hour. The National Minimum Basic Wage is approved by the Director of Labour and Pensions and is paid to employees by the employer in addition to all other wages and gratuities earned during the pay period. The minimum wage for service employees is the same as the minimum wage for all other industries.

The Minister of Labour, Hon. Tara A. Rivers, stated that balance is essential in determining a national minimum wage. The MWAC represented independent individuals, employers, and employees. It was also a diverse group, with gender and age representation among the members. In the near future, the National Minimum Basic Wage will be reviewed and studied and the monitoring and evaluation procedure will be incorporated into the revised Labour Relations Bill.

The National Minimum Basic Wage Cayman Islands has a minimum wage that will help the lowest paid workers stay out of poverty. It is CI$6.00 gross per hour for most employees and $4.50 for service employees. The National Minimum Basic Wage does not apply to wages paid to employees who are attending school.

Once this legislation is finalized and approved by the Legislative Assembly, the Labour (National Minimum Wage Cayman Islands) Order will be enacted. The bill provides guidance on the revision process in the future. The Labour Relations Bill will also be an important step in the process of raising wages for all employees.

Under the National Minimum Wage, overtime workers must be paid 1.5 times their normal hourly wage. Overtime workers must receive 1.5 times their normal hourly wage over the standard nine-hour work day. However, employers can request a Labour Tribunal waiver for this. This is a good idea if you want to avoid a penalty in case of non-compliance.
